Goldstone House is an all-female specialist supported living service in Brighton and Hove, providing dedicated, clinically informed support to women with mental health conditions and autism spectrum conditions. The service occupies a prominent position within Unicare’s Brighton and Hove portfolio, offering a focused and consistent model of care that has been developed specifically for women whose mental health and autistic experience intersect in complex and often under-recognised ways.
Women with autism frequently experience mental health conditions — including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and emotionally unstable personality disorder — at significantly higher rates than the general population. Goldstone House is specifically designed to hold and support this complexity, with a staff team that understands autism not as a set of deficits to be managed but as a different way of experiencing the world that requires thoughtful, flexible, and respectful support.
Every resident at Goldstone House benefits from a full PBS assessment and an individually tailored Behaviour Support Plan. The plan identifies the environmental, interpersonal, and psychological factors that influence each resident’s wellbeing and behaviour, and specifies the proactive strategies the team uses to prevent distress and promote positive experiences. The PBS approach is complemented by trauma-informed practice at every level — in how staff communicate, how boundaries are held, how transitions and changes are managed, and how the service environment itself is designed.
Goldstone House operates on a relational model of care. We believe that the quality of the relationship between a resident and their support workers is the single most powerful determinant of outcomes. Staff consistency, relationship continuity, and a culture of genuine respect and curiosity about each woman’s individual experience are therefore operational priorities — not aspirational values.
The Goldstone House team is an all-female team. Staff are recruited for values as well as skills, and the team includes workers with specific expertise in autism, mental health crisis support, and trauma-informed approaches. All staff complete a comprehensive induction including Unicare’s two-week Team Leader programme, PBS Foundation and Intermediate training, and specialist autism training covering sensory processing, communication, and co-occurring mental health conditions.
The service is managed by a dedicated House Manager supported by Unicare’s Service Manager and Registered Manager. Unicare’s PBS Specialist provides monthly reflective supervision and specialist input for complex cases. The management team is accessible, experienced, and actively involved in the day-to-day life of the service.
Goldstone House offers a well-structured, sensory-aware living environment in a desirable Brighton and Hove location. The house includes access to outdoor garden space, providing residents with the opportunity for fresh air and quiet outdoor time in a secure and private setting. Internal spaces are designed to offer both communal engagement and quiet, private sanctuary — recognising the particular importance of personal space and predictability for women with autism.
The service benefits from Brighton and Hove’s rich community infrastructure, with access to cultural, social, recreational, and therapeutic resources in the local area. Residents are actively supported to access the community in ways that are meaningful and manageable for them, and community participation is a core outcome goal for the service.
